  Mission Statement
  The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat.
It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.

Maxx

On the 25th February 2005 we were contacted by the manager of Solio Ranch Game Reserve who told us he had a very young baby white rhino with no mother.  One of his staff was driving round the ranch when this baby rushed up to the vehicle seemly thinking the car was its mother!  After a fruitless search for the mother it was decided that the baby needed to be looked after and we were called.  The next day Ian and Richard flew over to Solio and returned with the baby in the plane!

The baby, now named Maxx, lived with Tula. They were both staying at Ian and Jane’s house and again Jane had sleepless nights bottle feeding every couple of hours.  It is interesting to see the difference in behaviour – the black follows it’s mother while the white leads (you can imagine the confusion!).  However they both got on really well and certainly tolerating each other’s existence.

Maxx had to be moved to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in February 2006. If he would have stayed on Lewa he would have been in serious risk of getting attacked by a gown up male who was defending his territory. Maxx is doing very well and is well looked after by his keepers. He still belongs to Lewa and we will follow his progress carefully.

Gill Parker of the United Stated being welcomed in as the last runner on the Marathon. Her escort is the group of volunteer bike riders who monitor the course throughout the event. The Marathon breaks Records!
