The 2001 Safaricom Marathon

This year's event has undoubtedly been a huge success.

The total amount raised was
KShs 9,346,882.39
The cost of staging the event was
KShs 2,495,257.94
Giving us a staggering
KShs 6,851,624.45
to distribute to the beneficiaries.

This is over twice the total amount raised last year. Considering that the event is still in its infancy and that this was only the second time the event had been staged, we have set ourselves a high target for next year.

The money has been allocated as follows:

How the funds will be used

• Meru National Park will be using their funds to establish a release area for white rhino.
  
  
• The Nanyuki Cottage Hospital will be establishing a fund to cater for members of the community within Laikipia injured by wildlife.
  
  
• The four primary schools will put their funds towards the upgrading of infrastructure and school facilities under the supervision of each school committee.
  
  
• Il Ngwesi Group Ranch have pledged their funds towards the upgrade of an access road to the group, which will be carried out by the British Army starting in November.
  
  
• The Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust will use 33% of their funds for school bursaries for members of the Namunyak community, 33% for upgrading the Sarara Camp and the remaining 33% for the recurrent budget of the operations of the trust.
  
  
• The funds for Lewa Wildlife Conservancy will be put towards the recurrent budget and the protection of wildlife within the conservancy.
